International Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Day

Did you know 1 in 4 women of reproductive age suffer from Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB)?

This condition is defined by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care as excessive menstrual blood loss which interferes with a person's physical, social, emotional, and/or material quality of life. It’s not just a period problem; it’s a barrier to being your best self.

Watching my daughter struggle with heavy bleeding and pelvic pain every month is the worst. She’s missing so much
Oh, the first day of my period is just a write off
I’m always checking my chair when I stand up. It’s so embarrassing, but I’m scared of leaks
Our girls’ trip was supposed to be the highlight of my year, but my period had other plans

The personal accounts from those enduring HMB bring to light the real-world consequences of this condition. There are countless stories of missed work and school, in addition to the physical and emotional toll carried by women. These stories are not just statistics. They serve as a call to action, urging society to acknowledge and address this issue, which affects a quarter of women!

Bleed Better is an initiative led by Women’s Health Road Australia Incorporated (WHRAI). We are proud to be at the forefront of HMB advocacy, coordinating the inaugural International Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Day (IHMBD) on May 11th, 2024.

This initiative aims to dismantle menstrual stigma by enhancing their quality live through better management of HMB. Or in other words, through bleeding better. It promotes open discussions, shares lived experiences, and intends to provide a knowledge-sharing platform for healthcare professionals, educators, and advocates to improve understanding and management of HMB. This campaign aims to accelerate HMB related research. By leveraging digital technology, we aim to foster a two-way dialogue between patients.

Join us in making this day a turning point for menstrual health awareness and action.
